scary insight

The average American watches four hours of television each day. That’s 28 hours per week. Which is almost like having another full-time job. No wonder it’s so tough for people to get things done.

taking a step back = a step forward?

The hardest thing in the world is to simplify your life. It’s so easy to make it complex. The solution for a lot of the world’s problems may be to turn around and take a forward step. You can’t just keep trying to make a flawed system work.

    got my laptop sleeve!

so I wrote a while ago about using your old t-shirt to get a laptop sleeve and make a good deed while you're at it (the money goes to helping sex trafficking victims). well, I just got mine, and I really like it:

read here again about how you can get yours :)

    kandinsky on painting

"Painting is an art. And art is a power that should be aimed at developing the soul. If art does not do this job, the abyss that separates us from God is left without a bridge.

The artist owes his talent to God and has to settle this debt. To do this, he has to work hard, know that he is free in his art but not in his commitment to life. Everything he feels and thinks is part of the raw material with which to improve the spiritual atmosphere around him.

Beauty, whether in art or in a woman, cannot be empty; it has to be at the service of humankind and the world."

    what's he doing?

that was my first reaction, watching eric lewis rocking the piano... but once you watch and listen, you'll be more and more amazed. he's playing evanescence's going under, but... in an entirely different way. listen and enjoy.

creative person without funding? this might be useful

kickstarter.com seems like such a brilliant idea! from their page: "Kickstarter is focused on creative ideas and ambitious endeavors. We're a great way for artists, filmmakers, musicians, designers, writers, athletes, adventurers, illustrators, explorers, curators, promoters, performers, and others to bring their projects, events, and dreams to life."

basically you pitch an idea, ask for donations, and offer some sort of rewards in return. if the amount you're asking for is reached in the duration you specify, you will receive all that money in your account (only available in the US at the moment, unfortunately), and then it's obviously up to you to make sure that you also supply the backers with the rewards you have promised. it's an amazingly simple idea to promote and encourage arts and creativity, I really like it! check it out :)

    note to self

in css files, don't put any space between the number and unit. 24px and 24 px are vastly different. one works, the other doesn't. there goes an hour of my evening...

take a t-shirt, turn it into a laptop sleeve!

following up on yesterday's post on brilliant ideas, here's another one. and I really like it.

take an old t-shirt, send it to hello rewind, and for $49 they'll turn it into your very own personalized laptop sleeve!

and you know what the best part of it is? on top of you getting your personal sleeve, the money goes to helping sex trafficking survivors in NYC to re-establish themselves.

unfortunately they're currently only making them for apple's laptops, but if yours fits (check the dimensions on their page), it's well worth it!

    morning runs

for the past couple of weeks, I've been getting up an hour earlier in the morning to go out running. at first I wasn't enjoying getting up at all, and tried to convince myself in every possible way that I shouldn't go. I'd hope for rain when I woke up in the morning, or not make sure that I was going to be early enough, etc etc...

but after a couple of runs, I started to realize how good it was for me - I was feeling less tired, with more energy, during the work day; I obviously started losing a bit of weight; my knees and ankles were feeling better, and more...

and also, when I got to experience sunrises like these, how could I complain?

now I'm looking much more forward to it, hoping that it won't rain the next day, and going to bed an hour or so earlier, just to make sure I can get up and run.

here're some running tips as well, very much recommended!

    prayer

I'm just liking this prayer as of recently:

Praise be unto Thee, O my God! I am one of Thy servants, who hath believed on Thee and on Thy signs. Thou seest how I have set myself towards the door of Thy mercy, and turned my face in the direction of Thy loving-kindness. I beseech Thee, by Thy most excellent titles and Thy most exalted attributes, to open to my face the portals of Thy bestowals. Aid me, then, to do  53  that which is good, O Thou Who art the Possessor of all names and attributes!

I am poor, O my Lord, and Thou art the Rich. I have set my face towards Thee, and detached myself from all but Thee. Deprive me not, I implore Thee, of the breezes of Thy tender mercy, and withhold not from me what Thou didst ordain for the chosen among Thy servants.

Remove the veil from mine eyes, O my Lord, that I may recognize what Thou hast desired for Thy creatures, and discover, in all the manifestations of Thy handiwork, the revelations of Thine almighty power. Enrapture my soul, O my Lord, with Thy most mighty signs, and draw me out of the depths of my corrupt and evil desires. Write down, then, for me the good of this world and of the world to come. Potent art Thou to do what pleaseth Thee. No God is there but Thee, the All-Glorious, Who help is sought by all men.

I yield Thee thanks, O my Lord, that Thou hast wakened me from my sleep, and stirred me up, and created in me the desire to perceive what most of Thy servants have failed to apprehend. Make me able, therefore, O my Lord, to behold, for love of Thee and for the Sake of Thy pleasure, whatsoever Thou hast desired. Thou art He to the power of Whose might and sovereignty all things testify.

There is none other God but Thee, the Almighty, the Beneficent.

me, me, me, me version 2010

here's the update of "me" from last year:
  • Borna, a town in Saxony, Germany - maybe I should go visit myself? :)

  • A part of Bahretal in the Sächsische Schweiz district, Saxony, Germany - has apparently changed owners quite a lot...

  • Borna disease, an infection neurological of warm-blooded animals caused by the Borna virus

  • Borna of Croatia, a Medieval Slavic Prince of Dalmatia - wow!

  • A Persian word meaning "young." Can also be used as a name. The Persian diction is "بر نا" - yupps, that's me

  • The Rabha name of Channa amphibeus - apparently a rare species of snakehead

  • removed since 2009:
  • Borna Bartolović, a Croatian breakdancer - this article is empty right now [no update 2009]

  • and no new entries :(

on a coincidental note: this is post number 800 (including drafts) on my blog, and it is the 801st day I've been in Israel... :)
